Legend has it that this point was named after a tragic event involving wild mustangs and early cattlemen. These cowboys would skillfully round up the mustangs and drive them through a makeshift fence onto the narrow point.  After roping the horses they wanted, the gate would be opened and the remaining band would make their way back out on the mesa.  One time, however, the gate was accidentally left closed, leading to the unfortunate death from thirst of the remaining band.
