Deadhorse Point State Park is located just north of Canyonlands National Park in the Island In The Sky area. The view in the painting is of the Colorado River as it winds through the maze of canyons.
As the story goes, Deadhorse Point got its' name from an incident long ago when wild mustangs ranged on the mesa. Early cattlemen, who also ran cattle in the area, would run the mustangs through a makeshift fence out onto the narrow point. After they caught the mustangs they wanted to keep, the gate was opened and the remaining band could drift back out onto the mesa. One time, however, the gate didn't get opened and the remaining mustangs died of thirst in sight of the Colorado River.
